Low surface brightness galaxies in z > 1 galaxy clusters: HST approaching the progenitors of local ultra diffuse galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are a type of large low surface brightness (LSB) with particularly effective radii ( r eff > 1.5 kpc) that now routinely studied in the Local z < 0.1) Universe. While they found to be abundant clusters, groups, and field, their formation mechanisms remain elusive comprise an active topic debate. New insights may by studying counterparts at higher redshifts 1.0), even though cosmological dimming makes them difficult detect study this channel. In work, we use deepest Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging stacks 1 namely, SPT-CL J2106−5844 MOO J1014+0038. These two = 1.13 1.23, respectively, were monitored as part HST See-Change programme. making comparison Extreme Deep Field reference find statistical over-densities LSB both clusters. Based on stellar-population modelling assuming no size evolution, faintest sources can about bright expected for progenitors brightest local UDGs. We LSBs J1014−5844 already have old stellar populations place red sequence. correcting incompleteness based extrapolation scaling relations, estimate distant UDGs relatively under-abundant, compared UDGs, factor ∼3. Galaxy Formation and Evolution: Low Surface Brightness Galaxies
We investigate in detail the hypothesis that low surface brightness galaxies (LSB) differ from ordinary galaxies simply because they form in halos with large spin parameters. We compute star formation rates using the Schmidt law, assuming the same gas infall dependence on surface density as used in models of the Milky Way. We build stellar population models, predicting colours, spectra, and che...

Using the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) we investigated the clustering properties of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies in comparison to normal, High Surface Brightness (HSB) galaxies. We selected LSB galaxies and HSB galaxies with well measured redshifts from the SDSS data base and performed three-dimensional neighbour counting analysis within spheres of radii be...
متن کاملThe ISM of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies
Using Monte Carlo radiative transfer techniques, we model the dust content of the edge-on low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy UGC 7321 and explore the effects of dust on its disk color gradients. Dust alone cannot explain the large radial disk color gradients observed in this galaxy and we find that a significant fraction (∼50%) of the dust in UGC 7321 appears to be contained in a clumped mediu...
متن کاملThe Formation of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies
The formation of low surface brightness galaxies is an unavoidable prediction of any hierarchical clustering scenario. In these models, low surface brightness galaxies form at late times from small initial overdensities, and make up most of the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. Because there are tremendous observational biases against finding low surface brightness galaxies, the obse...
